In 2001, VGA provided marketing and public relations services for the Olympic Torch Relay which passed through Omaha en route to the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. To guarantee large community cheering crowds, we worked with large churches, schools and businesses along the route to have their kids/employees stationed alongside the road at the appropriate time to cheer the runners.
VGA also produced posters and fliers that showed the running route and pin-pointed all the gathering posts and worked with the media to guarantee early promotional coverage.
Both the relay runners and the media were invited to attend a pre-relay event. Media kits were produced and interviews were set up with local television and radio stations. Often, we sent relay runners to appear as the guest speakers on behalf of the event. Each had been chosen based up a challenging life situation in which they overcame, so they had very interesting stories to share.
For "day of" coverage, VGA worked with the Olympic Torch Relay staff to position key reporters and news crews on the official media van, which traveled alongside the runners.
